Read six sentence pairs and file your sense report.

How to play and score

Compare the highlighted word’s use in the two visible sentences. Choose Same literal sense when it means the same thing, even in a narrower setting; Different literal sense when it names a different real thing or action; Figurative use when the bulletin uses a comparison, such as a “flood of complaints”. Figurative takes priority over a changed literal meaning.

Choose all six before filing once. Earn 15 points per correct judgment plus 10 for all six. These are authored fictional bulletins, not measurements of a real news corpus. Reveal finishes with no earned score. There is no timer.

Same literal sense includes a narrower setting. Different literal sense names another real thing or action. Figurative use makes a comparison, such as a flood of complaints.
